Bredius acquired this piece because he thought it might be a Rembrandt (“just a head cut out of the anatomy lesson of 1632”); later he judged it to be by Ferdinand Bol. Now it is attributed to the Amsterdam portrait- and history painter Jacob Backer, pupil of Rembrandt.
